Tales From the Laundry Basket
I used to think a basic was just that.
A basic.
The plain T-shirt under the jumper. The soft top worn around the house. The simple long sleeve they slept in when pyjamas felt like too much fuss.
They weren't the clothes I spent much time thinking about.
Until I realised they were probably the clothes my child spent the most time wearing.
The Layer Closest to Their Skin
It started on a colder morning.
My child needed a jumper, but I knew that after an hour of running around they'd probably be too warm in it.
So underneath, I put on one of their ultra-soft bamboo tees.
Nothing revolutionary.
Just a really comfortable layer between their skin and everything else.
But somewhere along the way, I started doing it more often.
Under jumpers.
Under school clothes.
Under jackets on cold mornings.
Sometimes just on its own.
And I began to understand that the layer nobody really sees can make quite a difference.

Then It Became Sleepwear
One evening, bath done and bedtime approaching, I reached for the same bamboo top rather than their usual pyjamas.
Soft. Breathable. Stretchy.
No irritating tag at the back of the neck.
No complicated bedtime outfit.
Just something comfortable to sleep in.
And that became another little habit.
Some nights it was proper pyjamas.
Other nights it was simply a soft bamboo top and comfortable bottoms.
My child certainly didn't seem concerned about whether something had officially been labelled sleepwear.
They just knew what felt good.

I Started Looking at “Basics” Differently
I'd always thought the interesting part of a child's wardrobe was everything else.
The lovely jumper.
The special outfit.
The new jacket.
But increasingly, I found myself paying more attention to what went underneath them.
Because if something is going to sit directly against my child's skin for hours, be layered under other clothes, slept in, played in and washed over and over again...
perhaps that's exactly where quality matters.
And perhaps a basic isn't really basic at all.
It's essential.
Simple Clothes. Important Job.
These days, I still buy the fun pieces.
Of course I do.
But I've become much fussier about the simple ones.
I want the T-shirt underneath the jumper to be beautifully soft.
I want sleepwear to breathe and move with them.
I want fabrics that feel gentle against their skin and enough stretch that they can wriggle, curl up, climb and sleep without thinking about what they're wearing.
Because I've realised something.
The clothes children barely notice are often the ones doing their job best.
And sometimes getting dressed right really does start with getting the basics right.
A Little Note From Baby Todd & Co.
The simplest pieces in a child's wardrobe are often the hardest working.
That's why our bamboo essentials are designed to feel beautifully soft against the skin, with 100% tagless construction, ultra-soft fabric, gentle seams, breathable comfort and four-way stretch.
Wear them on their own. Layer them under a favourite jumper. Make them part of a comfortable bedtime routine.
Because when something spends that much time next to their skin, we don't think of it as just a basic.
We think it's worth getting right.
And somehow, that feels like much better value.
